What are you Screwing Up?

What are you Screwing Up?

After seeing Kristen Hadeed speak at the Wellness Council of Wisconsin’s annual conference last fall, I had to dig deeper and read her book Permission to Screw Up. Inspired by a pair of jeans that she couldn’t afford as a poor college student, Kristen, through ad an in the paper to clean houses for cash, came to run a successful student-based cleaning company called Student Maid. Let me clarify…she runs a company where college students are lining up to clean other people’s toilets. As you can imagine, Kristen piqued my interest in a few ways… First, she wore ripped jeans, a t-shirt and a ponytail on stage for her keynote. It’s not the ripped jeans that got me, but that ...

The Cold Never Bothered Me Anyway

The Cold Never Bothered Me Anyway

Thanksgiving 2013. The annual family gathering and all of us going out to see a new movie. The pick back then was the latest in The Hunger Games series – Catching Fire. Not really age appropriate for my 4-year-old nephew. So, my husband and I said we would take him to Frozen. The opposite end of the temperature spectrum. Walking in I wondered would he like the girl-power theme and stay interested? Well, I thought, at least there was a snowman and I like a good power ballad. I should have had no doubts. At one point in the movie, where Elsa’s powers are known and dangerous – my nephew said out loud for everyone in the theater to hear – “Don’t touch ...

If it Ain’t Broke, Make it Better

If it Ain’t Broke, Make it Better

Recently I found myself investing a great deal of time and energy into improving a process. It wasn’t my process, I didn’t create it, but I was enjoying taking it apart and putting it back together in a way I believed would make it better. I’ve always enjoyed doing that with systems. Designing systems isn’t a natural strength of mine; I work best when I’m improving or adjusting procedures. While I was working on the project, someone invoked a familiar expression: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” You know what…I’ve never believed in that. That idea doesn’t just go against what I believe in, it goes against who I am and how I work. I work best when I’m ...

Four Memorable Moments from Kolbe’s Conation Nation Symposium 2019

Four Memorable Moments from Kolbe’s Conation Nation Symposium 2019

Preparing for my first Kolbe Corp’s Conation Nation Symposium (CNS) was a thrill. I had to be confident. The rest of my team had each been there at least twice before and knew what they were doing, so I had to channel their comfort with CNS over my curiosity and uncertainty about what it would be like. I had to be sharp. I am not yet Kolbe-certified and almost everyone else there would be, so I had to be ready to tap into what I know about Kolbe and ensure I understood the methodology behind my results. I had to be energetic. We were launching a brand new company, after all. This was our first chance to show a crowd ...

The Spark

The Spark

Attending the annual Kolbe Conation Nation Symposium has always been a highlight of my year, but in 2019 it was taken to a whole new level. I had the opportunity to work directly with Kathy Kolbe on a mainstage presentation focused on her book: Powered by Instinct – 5 Rules for Trusting Your Guts. I had used the book as source material in planning my next life upon leaving an organization after almost 25 years. My goal was to take the wisdom that Kathy had written about and make it my own. Not her words – but my words. Personalize it in a way that would bring it alive for me and activate my best nature. Little did I know ...
